Subject Sampling
On Monday during the TY Induction all students will be asked to choose which Leaving Certificate subject they would like to sample from September until Christmas. This choice will be made again for the two modules after Christmas. Below is a short paragraph on each of the subjects available:
Applied Maths (Mr Howlett) - Applied Maths is really ‘Mathematical Physics’. It is a fairly short course that consists entirely of solving Physics problems using mathematical techniques. Essentially investigating how things move and and interact and using algebra, trigonometry etc to calculate times, distances, speeds, angles etc.
Art (Ms Keogh) - The pre-Christmas course is a painting module. Painting the landscape. Acrylic on Canvas. Including Colour theory. Mixing paint. Painting techniques. Looking at the Impressionists. Each student will complete one finished painting. After Christmas the Course will be Clay Modelling - Looking at sculpture. Clay techniques. Making armatures. Each student will complete a life size clay head.
Computer Aided Design (Mr Benson) - An introduction to 3D modelling and developing visualisation on computers. Also covered are the basics of Design and Communication Graphics that will provide students with the opportunity for visualising and comprehending information presented verbally or graphically.
German (Miss Morris) - The main aims of TY German are to maintain and encourage the oral/aural /written skillset from Junior Cycle. To develop students’ Landeskunde of German Speaking Countries. To encourage students to research more about the German Speaking Countries, their history, linguistic differences and their traditions. Each week will have three classes which will include: Grammar Revision, Oral work, Aural work & Cultural development.
Greek (Ms Penn) - TY Greek is offered to all students, regardless of previous experience in the subject. Modules are flexible and tailored to student interests and ambitions, such as those who might want to take up Ancient Greek from scratch for the Leaving Cert. Topics in the past have included: Greek Drama, Athens vs Sparta, the Olympics, Warfare, Greek Philosophy, and Architecture of the Acropolis. Activities in previous years have involved: individual and group project work, a trip to the UCD Classics Museum, debates, and dramatic performances.
Latin (Ms Wyer) - Any student interested in studying Latin at Leaving Cert should strongly consider TY Latin, as the focus for the year tends to be on the Roman History elements of the Leaving Cert course. That said, the modules are flexible and take into account class dynamic and individual student interests. Topics in the past have included: Augustus’ Rise to Power, Crazy Emperors, Classical Architecture, Roman Food, and Graffiti in Pompeii. Activities in previous years have involved: individual and group project work, a tour Classical Architecture in Dublin, debates, and cooking.
Music (Ms Dunne) - Students will learn how to compose, perform and use music writing and recording apps. They will develop their analytical listening skills. They will also study the history and development of music through various music genres.
